A U X Builder
Build it
Each unit is 1 to 4 bays. Units join end to end in a row. Flip a unit and it turns 180° into the second row: where it meets a front-facing unit, their high walls meet and the roofs form a gable over one 16 ft deep room, with its doors on the flipped unit's low wall. End options go on the ends of the front row.
What it adds up to
Solar by month
Energy per day, after wiring and inverter losses. Seattle sunlight from NREL's 1961–1990 record for Sea-Tac; the model matches that record's tilted-panel figures within 4% each month. Dashed outlines show what shade takes away, both direct sun and the patch of sky the houses and fences block. Trees aren't drawn, so they aren't counted.
Energy, power draw and hold-down are modelled: 460 W panels lying on the 14° roof, the sun's path over Seattle, about 0.6 kWh to charge a bike overnight, and a 20 psf wind on the side of the shed. Quantities come straight from the model.
Where it goes
Distances are to the nearest part of the unit, gutters, ramps and cistern included. The site is drawn from what you enter, not surveyed; check setbacks and easements for the lot before siting a unit.
The display
A single amber line of LEDs, one display per unit, sized to the unit: 10 modules (126") on a 3-bay unit, fewer on shorter ones. It rests on the clock, the temperature and the next sunset or sunrise, worked out for Seattle, and breaks in when something happens. Numbers are spelled out. Readings here are examples, not live data.
Detail A · panel, clamp bar, post
Plan section at a wall post. The panel edges meet over the post and the screw passes between them, so there are no holes in the panels. The gap needs to be about 1/2" to leave room for the panels to grow in summer.
How it's built
- 1-1/2" (15-series) aluminium T-slot frame, all inside the panels.
- 16 mm twinwall polycarbonate, one sheet per bay, flutes vertical.
- Outside, a calm grid of 1-1/2" × 1/4" flat bars clamps every panel edge, with one diagonal per bay.
- A diagonal brace on two structural pivots in every wall and roof bay.
- 4 ft sliding doors on a double top track, one per bay, each with its own lock.
- 3:12 shed roof, 7'-6" at the back, 9'-6" at the doors, 20" overhang over the doors.
- Leveling feet with wide pads; no digging.
